How It Works

When to Pray Tahajjud, Worked Out for You

Pillars works as a Tahajjud app by showing when the last third of the night begins at your exact location, so you know when the most recommended time for night prayer starts. It also shows the middle of the night (for the end of Isha in some schools of thought) and Duha time (for the Duha sunnah prayer). It is for anyone who wants to pray Tahajjud or Duha without doing the maths every night.

Why This Matters

Tahajjud Times Without the Maths

  1. Measured from Maghrib to Fajr

    The night is measured from Maghrib to the next Fajr. Pillars shows the midpoint as the middle of the night, the end of the preferred time for Isha (in some schools of thought), and the start of the final third as the last third.

  2. Duha, from 15 minutes after sunrise

    Duha is shown from 15 minutes after sunrise, because the first minutes after sunrise are a disliked time to pray. Because sunset and Fajr move every day, so do these times, and Pillars updates them automatically.

  3. Earlier in summer, in step with your Fajr

    Because the night is split using tonight's sunset and tomorrow's dawn, the last third is much earlier in summer than in winter in places like the UK. Pillars uses the same calculation method as your five daily prayers, so the night times line up with your Fajr and Isha. All of it is worked out on your phone, offline.

Pillars shows when the last third of the night begins for your location, the time many scholars recommend for Tahajjud, along with the middle of the night.

Pillars takes the time from Maghrib to the next Fajr, divides it into three, and shows when the final third begins.

From 15 minutes after sunrise, because praying in the first 15 minutes after sunrise is disliked.
