When Is Ramadan in the Years Ahead?
Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year, because the Islamic calendar follows the moon. These start dates come from the Umm al-Qura calculation; the actual start in your community depends on the moon sighting and can be a day later.

In 2030 there are two Ramadans in one Gregorian year: one that begins in January and one that begins in December.
Why Does Ramadan Start on a Different Date Each Year?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. A Hijri month begins when the new crescent moon is seen, so it lasts 29 or 30 days, and a Hijri year is about 354 days long. That is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Ramadan arrives about 11 days earlier every year and passes through every season over about 33 years.
Some communities follow a calculated calendar such as Umm al-Qura, the Fiqh Council of North America or Diyanet. Others wait for the crescent to be seen locally or in a country they follow. That is why the start, and Eid, can differ by a day between mosques in the same city.
