Cities
Tahajjud Time In Cities Around The World: When The Last Third Starts
Tonight's times in each city's own local time, counting the night from Maghrib. Tap a city to see its times.
The night runs from Maghrib, at sunset, to Fajr, at true dawn. Three times follow from it:
Length of the night
Fajr minus Maghrib
Islamic midnight
Maghrib plus half the night
Last third of the night
Fajr minus a third of the night, until Fajr
For example, if Maghrib is at 7:30 PM and Fajr at 4:30 AM, the night is 9 hours long. A third of it is 3 hours, so the last third starts at 1:30 AM, and Islamic midnight is at midnight.
The calculator at the top of this page does this for you: it is a last third of the night calculator, a tahajjud calculator and an Islamic midnight calculator in one, for wherever you are or from your own mosque's Maghrib and Fajr.
Counting from Isha instead of Maghrib makes the night shorter, so the last third starts a little later. We round Islamic midnight down and the start of the last third up, to the minute, so neither is ever shown on the wrong side.
Maghrib and Fajr come from the city's mosque timetable where there is one, and otherwise from the calculation method the Pillars app uses for the country. Other sites can differ by a few minutes because they use another Fajr angle, count from sunset to sunrise, or round differently.
Why It Matters
Why The Last Third Matters
The last third of the night has a special place in the Sunnah as a time for prayer, supplication and asking forgiveness.
Tahajjud, also called qiyam al-layl, is the voluntary night prayer many Muslims pray in it, before Fajr.
Islamic Midnight
Islamic Midnight And The End Of Isha
Islamic midnight is half-way through the night, not 12:00, so its time on the clock changes with your place and the season.
Scholars differ on whether Isha must be prayed before it. Our guide When does Isha end? sets out the views.
High Latitudes
Prayer Times When The Night Never Gets Dark
Far enough from the equator, the sun in summer never gets far enough below the horizon for the dawn that marks Fajr. This happens in places such as the UK, Canada and northern Europe. Fajr is then set by a high-latitude rule: the twilight-angle rule, a seventh of the night, or the middle of the night. Mosques choose different rules, which is why their summer timetables differ.
On those nights this page marks Fajr and the last third as estimates. The night still runs from Maghrib to that Fajr.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
When Is The Last Third Of The Night Tonight?
It depends on where you are, because Maghrib and Fajr change with your location. Tonight it starts at 1:22 AM in Delhi, 1:32 AM in Karachi, 1:19 AM in Dubai, 1:03 AM in London and 1:05 AM in New York, local time, and lasts until Fajr. The tool at the top of this page works it out for wherever you are.
What Is The Last Third Of The Night?
The last third of the night is the final third of the time between Maghrib and the next Fajr: it begins once two thirds of the night have passed and ends at Fajr. Many Muslims aim to pray tahajjud in it. Islamic midnight, half-way between Maghrib and Fajr, comes before it. You may also see it written as the last 3rd or the final 1/3 of the night.
How Do You Calculate The Last Third Of The Night?
Take the time from Maghrib to Fajr, divide it by three and subtract one third from Fajr. For a night from 7:30 PM to 4:30 AM, the night is 9 hours long, a third is 3 hours, so the last third starts at 1:30 AM and ends at Fajr.
Does The Last Third Of The Night Change Every Day?
Yes. Maghrib and Fajr move a little every day, so the length of the night and the start of the last third move with them. The timetable on this page shows each of the next 30 nights for your place.
What Is Islamic Midnight?
Midnight in Islam, or Islamic midnight, is the middle of the night, half-way between Maghrib and Fajr, not 12:00 on the clock.
How Do You Calculate Islamic Midnight?
Take the time from Maghrib to Fajr, halve it and add it to Maghrib. For a night from 7:30 PM to 4:30 AM, half of the 9 hours is 4 hours 30 minutes, so Islamic midnight is 12:00 AM. The Islamic midnight calculator at the top of this page shows when it is today, wherever you are.
Does Isha End At Islamic Midnight?
Scholars differ on whether Isha's time ends at Islamic midnight or at Fajr. Our guide When does Isha end? explains the views.

How Do You Calculate Tahajjud Time?

When Does Tahajjud End?
Tahajjud ends when Fajr begins, which is also when the last third of the night ends.
Why Do Different Websites Give Different Times?
Sites use different Fajr angles and calculation methods, some count the night from Isha or from sunset to sunrise, and some round the times. This page uses a city's mosque timetable where there is one and otherwise the method the Pillars app uses for the country, and counts from Maghrib to Fajr.
What Happens In Summer In Places Where It Never Gets Fully Dark?
Far enough from the equator, including the UK, Canada and northern Europe, the sun in summer never gets far enough below the horizon for true dawn, so Fajr is set by a high-latitude rule instead. The night still runs from Maghrib to that Fajr, so the last third is an estimate on those nights, and this page marks it.
