Ramadan 2027: dates, start day and what to expect

When Ramadan 2027 is expected to start and end, why Eid may fall on different days in the UK, and how long fasts will be.
Updated
October 19, 2026
Summary
  • Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the evening of Sunday 7 February.
  • Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027, depending on calculation or local moonsighting.
  • UK fasts are about 11 to 13 hours, calculated from 11h 28m to 13h 13m in London (MWL).
  • The last ten nights are expected to begin at sunset on Saturday 27 February; the calculated 27th night is Friday 5 March.

Short answer. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the evening of Sunday 7 February. It should end with Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027, depending on moonsighting. These come from calculated calendars (Umm al-Qura, FCNA, Diyanet) and the UK sighting forecast (ICOUK), not announcements yet.1, 2, 3, 4, 5

All dates on this page are expectations as of 19 October 2026. Final dates are confirmed by each community's mosque or moonsighting body on the evening before. Follow your own mosque's announcement.

When does Ramadan 2027 start in the UK?

Every calculated calendar we checked, and the UK local-sighting forecast (ICOUK), puts the first fast on Monday 8 February 2027.1, 2, 3, 4

When is the first taraweeh?

Islamic days begin at sunset, not midnight. So the first night of Ramadan begins at sunset on Sunday 7 February. That evening holds the first taraweeh prayers, and the first suhoor is before dawn on Monday 8 February. FCNA: "Tarawih prayer will start on Sunday night."2

Why is the start agreed? The new moon (the astronomical conjunction) falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 at 15:56 UT.6 That evening the crescent "cannot be seen anywhere in the world", according to moonsighting.com.7 By the next evening, Sunday 7 February, it is expected to be visible in North Africa and parts of Europe. ICOUK, a UK local-sighting group, forecasts it will be visible "in the UK to Morocco region".3, 7

Sources:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 ECFR has no published 1448 calendar that we could find; the dates show what its criterion gives, not an announcement.2, 7 HMNAO usually publishes a crescent-visibility note on GOV.UK about three weeks before the month.8 Singapore's official holiday list also has Eid on Wednesday 10 March.9

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected on Tuesday 9 March by calculated calendars, or Wednesday 10 March by local sighting in the UK.1, 2, 4, 5 The night of Eid begins at sunset after the last fast.

Eid may split because the moon is very young on 8 March. The next new moon falls on Monday 8 March at 09:29 UT.6 London sunset that day is about 17:53 (our calculation).10 So the crescent will be under nine hours old at UK sunset. Moonsighting.com says "the moon cannot be seen anywhere" that evening.11 ICOUK says it "may not be visible to the naked eye" from the UK to Morocco.5

Calculated calendars use rules that a moon this young can still meet, so they end Ramadan after 29 days. Communities that wait for a sighting would complete 30 days, so Eid falls a day later. On the evening of Tuesday 9 March, the crescent is expected to be visible across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.11

The principle behind sighting comes from the hadith, which says to complete thirty days of Sha'ban if the crescent is hidden:12

Start fasting on seeing the crescent… complete thirty days of Sha'banSahih al-Bukhari 1909

Scholars and bodies differ on whether calculation can stand in for sighting, and on whose sighting counts.2, 7, 13, 14 Ask your mosque which approach it follows.

How do UK mosques decide?

UK mosques follow different, long-standing approaches. This is why the start or Eid can differ by a day within one city.7, 15

ApproachWho follows it (examples)Source
Follow Saudi Arabia's announcementEast London Mosque and London Central Mosque did so in 202615, 16
UK sighting first, then trusted reports from countries east of Britain (such as Morocco)Wifaqul Ulama, since 20177, 13
UK local naked-eye sightingICOUK, citing fatawa from several Darul Ulooms3, 14

In 2026 this produced two start dates. Mosques following Saudi Arabia began on Wednesday 18 February, while those waiting for a Moroccan or UK sighting began on Thursday 19 February.15

What this means for 2027. All three UK approaches above point to the same start: Monday 8 February.1, 2, 3 Eid may split. Saudi-following mosques will wait for Saudi Arabia's announcement on the evening of Monday 8 March. If Saudi Arabia announces Eid for Tuesday 9 March, in line with its Umm al-Qura calendar, those mosques celebrate then. If it does not accept a sighting that night, it would also be Wednesday 10 March.1, 11 Mosques following UK or Moroccan sighting expect Wednesday 10 March.5

We don't say which approach is right. Your local mosque's announcement is the one to follow.

What time are suhoor and iftar in Ramadan 2027?

Suhoor ends at Fajr (true dawn, when light first spreads across the horizon), and iftar is at Maghrib (sunset). These are calculated times, not any mosque's timetable. Mosques use different Fajr conventions, so check your local mosque's timetable.10

Toronto06:0517:3805:2418:1511h 33m → 12h 51m

How we calculated these: adhan-js 4.4.6 with two methods. MWL (Muslim World League) puts Fajr at 18° below the horizon; ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) uses 15°. Maghrib is sunset with no offset. For the UK we used the "middle of the night" high-latitude rule. On the last day, apps using the one-seventh rule show a later suhoor end, by about 3 minutes in London and 15 minutes in Glasgow; the twilight-angle rule gives the same times as ours on these dates. We used city-centre coordinates at sea level and cross-checked every value against a second library (praytimes 2.3.2); they agree within half a minute. "Day 1" is Monday 8 February. "Last day" is Monday 8 March, the 29th fast on the calculated calendar. If your mosque completes 30 days, there will be a further fast on Tuesday 9 March, which these tables don't cover.10

The ISNA times are about 20 minutes later than MWL for suhoor in the UK. That gap is the difference between twilight angles. Our guide to When does Fajr start? explains it.

How long are fasts in 2027?

UK fasts in Ramadan 2027 are short: about 11 to 13 hours. In London, the calculated fast grows from 11h 28m on the first day to 13h 13m on the last under MWL (11h 09m to 12h 53m under ISNA).10 Glasgow starts shortest, at 11h 14m, and ends longest, at 13h 18m.

Ramadan 2027 runs from late winter into early spring. Each day, dawn comes earlier and sunset later, so fasts lengthen by about 1¾ hours (London) to 2 hours (Glasgow) over the month. All of it falls in GMT. UK clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March 2027, after Eid. US and Canadian clocks change on 14 March, also after Eid.10

When is Laylat al-Qadr 2027?

No one knows the exact night of Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree). The Prophet ﷺ said:17

Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten…Sahih al-Bukhari 2017

Each night begins at sunset the evening before its day. With a first fast on Monday 8 February, the odd nights fall as follows.10

NightBegins at sunset on
21stSaturday 27 February
23rdMonday 1 March
25thWednesday 3 March
27thFriday 5 March
29thSunday 7 March

The last ten nights begin at sunset on Saturday 27 February. Diyanet (Turkey) marks the 27th night, Kadir Gecesi, on the evening of Friday 5 March.4 These are calculated dates. If your mosque starts Ramadan a day later, every night moves one evening later.

What to expect, and how to prepare

  • Short winter fasts. Expect around 11½ hours at the start and just over 13 at the end in most UK cities (calculated, MWL).10
  • Early iftars. Iftar is around 5pm in early February and around 6pm by early March in the UK.10 For many people that means breaking the fast at work or on the commute.
  • Eid on a weekday. Both possible Eid dates, Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March, are weekdays. If you plan to book time off, confirm the date your mosque will follow early.
  • Eid prayer. It is held in the morning after sunrise, and UK mosques often run several jama'ahs. East London Mosque held four in 2026, from 7:00 to 10:30am.16 Check your mosque's times nearer the day.
  • Get a timetable. Pick up your mosque's Ramadan timetable, or set an app to match it. Our roundup of the best Ramadan apps for 2027 compares the options.
